Las Vegas – The lawyers of the suspect of killing the Rap Tupac Shakur icon want to delay the trial of next month, saying that more time is needed for research work to ensure that Duane “Keffe D” Davis obtains a fair trial.
The motion presented on Friday in a Nevada court provides an idea of Davis’s defense, noting that a private investigator has identified witnesses who can testify that he was not at the 1996 shooting scene, nor was he in Las Vegas at that time at that time .
The motion also suggests that someone else can have orchestrated the shooting and that the witnesses who could testify on the matter are being interviewed.
The defense team said in a statement that new developments and the need to interview key witnesses require a delay. On Tuesday a hearing was scheduled to discuss the moment of the trial, it will currently begin in March.
“This case involves accusations of decades, and with each new evidence, it is increasingly clear that the critical events have not yet been completely examined,” said lawyer Carl Arnold, who leads Davis’s defense.
On the night of September 7, 1996, Shakur was in a BMW promoted by the founder of the death records, Marion “suge” Knight. They were waiting for a red light when a White Cadillac stopped with them and shots shots.
Davis, a former gang leader who is accused of orchestrating Shakur’s murder near the Las Vegas Strip, declared himself innocent of first degree murder and has been imprisoned since his arrest in September 2023.
A long time ago known by researchers as one of the four suspects identified at the beginning of the investigation, he is the only one charged.
Arnold has argued that Davis should never have been accused of immunity agreements that Davis says he arrived years ago with federal and local prosecutors while living in California.
Prosecutors have said that any immunity agreement was limited and have strong evidence against Davis, including their own shooting accounts in revealing memories “Compton Street Legend”.
Davis has recognized in the interviews and in the memories provided by the weapon used in the shooting and was in the car. But their judicial presentations say that their descriptions in recent years of orchestrating the shooting were “made for entertainment purposes and to earn money.”
Defensor lawyers also say they have witness information indicating that Shakur was stable after shooting and died suddenly after being hospitalized for a week. They consulted medical and forensic experts to evaluate possible alternative causes of death.
