Seul, South Korea – the South Korean data protection authority said Monday that the new downloads of the China Depseek application had been suspended in the country after Deepseek acknowledged not taking into account some of the rules of The agency to protect personal data.
The application of the application will resume once the improvements are made in accordance with the country’s privacy law, said the Personal Information Protection Commission (PIPC) at a media conference.
The measure that entered into force on Saturday aims to block new downloads of the application, said the agency, although Deepseek’s web service remains accessible in the country.
The Chinese startup designated legal representatives last week in South Korea and had partially recognized the considerations of the country’s data protection law, the PIPC said.
The Italian data protection authority, the guarantor, said last month he had ordered Deepseek to block his chatbot in the country after not addressing the regulator’s concerns about his privacy policy.
Depseek did not immediately respond to a comment request.
When asked about the previous movements of the South Korean government departments to block Depseek, a spokesman for the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs told information about February 6 that the Chinese government granted great importance to privacy and data safety and protected it according to the law.
The spokesman also said that Beijing would never ask any company or individual to collect or store data in breach of the laws.
