Ukraine initiative – Newspaper – DAWN.COM

Although Donald Trump has not been able to fulfill his promise to end the Ukraine conflict “24 hours” after assuming the position, the US president is clearly not interested in pumping more funds from the United States in this war. In addition, his Oberturas to Russia, and the use of scathing language to attack the Ukrainian President, have sent shock waves through kyiv and European capitals.

Trump is not a man known for enjoying diplomatic subtleties, but the language he has used for the Ukrainian President has been implacable. He has described Volodymyr Zelensky as a “dictator” and a “moderately successful comedian” with the intention of maintaining the American “Salsa train” in progress. This is a sign as clear as anyone that the flow of US funds and weapons is coming to an end.

In fact, Russia’s Foreign Minister and his American counterpart met Tuesday in Riyadh to restart bilateral commitment, which had practically stopped under the Biden administration. This whole indicates that the participation of the United States in the Ukraine conflict will be reduced considerably, if it does not end completely.

In a few days, three years will spend since the Russians invaded Ukraine, with the conflict that rents the international order and revived the ghosts of the cold war. It is time for war to end, but fair and equitable.

Trump was clearly wrong when he accused Ukraine of starting the war, since it was Moscow who invaded his western neighbor. But relations between the West and Russia had deteriorated since before the invasion, with Moscow fearing that NATO was getting closer and more to its borders. The Ukraine conflict, in fact, has become a war of power that faces NATO against Russia; There have been dangerous moments in which both parties have approached a direct conflagration. The US president is an important skeptic of NATO, who would explain his urgency to conclude this war.

Reacting to the meeting between Russia and the main diplomats of the United States in Riad, President Vladimir Putin said he is ready to return to the peace process. This resolution must be supported by confidence construction measures. To begin with, both parties should commit to a high immediate fire, while Moscow needs to recognize the territorial sovereignty of Ukraine; The Soviet Union is now part of history, and Russia should respect the independence of ex -Soviet states.

On the other hand, NATO states cannot afford to treat Russia as a Bogey man and must commit to Moscow with a spirit of mutual respect, working for collective security. It is difficult to say whether the Trump Ukraine Peace Initiative will succeed, but it will be very difficult for kyiv and its European sponsors to face the Russian military machine without the great weapons of the United States and the endless supply of dollars.
