Thousands of people in British Columbia are without power on Christmas Day as continued rain and strong winds collapse power lines, disrupt travel and topple Christmas decorations.
BC Hydro says almost 6,500 customers were without power Wednesday afternoon.
Several wind and rain warnings also remain in effect for the province’s north coast and central coast, western sections of Metro Vancouver near water and the eastern edge of Vancouver Island.
Environment Canada says gusts travel up to 140 kilometers per hour in some coastal areas.
The weather agency says the weather system will bring up to 80 millimeters of rain to Metro Vancouver and Squamish on Wednesday afternoon, while 100 millimeters of rain is forecast for the North Shore, northern Coquitlam and Maple Ridge.
Environment Canada says heavy rain will last until Boxing Day.
Collapsed power lines also closed Highway 16 in both directions, about a kilometer east of Tlell, an area on the east coast of Graham Island and part of Haida Gwaii, BC, Drive BC says.
The Vancouver Parks and Recreation Board says Stanley Park is closed today due to increased tree-related hazards caused by high winds combined with heavy rain.
“Many trees remain vulnerable due to the hemlock outbreak. We appreciate your understanding and patience,” the park board said.
BC Ferries says it has canceled service on multiple routes due to the weather, including departures between Vancouver and Nanaimo.
