The United States Secret Service shot an adult man near the White House in Washington, DC, shortly after Sunday midnight after an “armed confrontation” with the police, according to the agency.
The meeting occurred near the intersection of 17th Street and F Street NW.
On Saturday, the Local Police had reported a “suicidal individual” who possibly traveled to DC from Indiana, the agency said. The secret service personnel then located the individual’s vehicle and saw a person on foot that coincided with the description.
“As the officers approached, the individual slying a firearm, and there was an armed confrontation, during which our staff fired the shots,” said the secret service on Sunday in a shared statement on X by spokesman Anthony Guglielmi.
The suspect was transported to a hospital and his condition is currently unknown.
The statement also indicated that no injuries were reported among the secret service personnel, and that the incident was under investigation.
