Murder charges have been announced in the death of Robert Brooks, a 43 -year -old inmate who was beaten by the guards in a prison in the state of New York in December.
Governor Kathy Hochul announced the charges on Thursday, adding that the New York State Police would be displayed to make arrests.
“Robert Brooks should be alive today,” Hochul said in a statement. “The brutal attack against Mr. Brooks was disgusting, and I immediately moved to finish the use of those involved.”
An accusation of a large jury was launched later on Thursday, accusing six correctional officers with second degree murder, assault of gangs and involuntary homicide. There were 17 employees, including four sergeants and two nurses, who were supposedly involved in death and were suspended as a result of the incident.
The bodycam images of December 9 showed Brooks with handcuffed hands on the back in Marcy’s correctional installation, while multiple guards hit him and kicked him. Brooks was in a bed for patients when the attack occurred, and at a time in the video his face was visibly bloody.
He was taken to a hospital and died the next day. An autopsy report declared that Brooks’ death was homicide, according to his family’s lawyer.
Brooks died due to neck compression and multiple wounds of forceful force, said lawyer Elizabeth Mazur a NBC News.
Hochul ordered that 14 workers be completed in Marcy’s correctional center after the Brooks’ beating video emerged. The Correctional Association of the State of New York and the benevolent association of the Police said that the incident “does not reflect the great work that the vast majority of our membership performs every day.”
Brooks’ heritage filed a civil complaint last month, accusing 17 people of excessive force, in addition to other accusations in relation to their death.
