Houston has advanced to the last four of the NCAA male basketball tournament, the third seed number 1 to do so.
The Cougars, the best sown in the west media region, kept Tennessee, 69-50, to extend the longest active winning streak of division I to 17 games. Houston is now destined for the Final Four in San Antonio, joining the Top Seeds Duke and Florida companions, who won on Saturday.
There is the possibility that a fourth upper seed, Auburn, can join them later on Sunday, when the Tigers face the second state of Michigan in the southern region. Only once before in the history of the tournament, in 2008, they have the first four seeds advanced to a Four Four.
Tennessee was plagued by a horrible offensive performance that saw them score 15 points in the part -time while 19. The 15 points were the least scored in the first half in a NCAA tournament game for a seed between two, according to ESPN Research.
After doing only six of its first 32 shots, including a start of 0 by 14 in triples, Tennessee made four of its next eight triples in the middle of the second half to eventually cut its deficit to only 10 with 5:41 remaining.
His return was trying to make decades of history, since the teams that followed 19 or more points in part time were 0-243 of all time in the history of the NCAA tournament.
However, his rally never really threatened Houston, who advanced to the seventh final of the program despite firing only four free throws in part by committing only five ball losses.
Houston shot 28 of 66 from the floor, while Tennessee gathered only 15 of 52, including 5 of 29 from beyond the three -point arch. LJ Cryer led Houston with 17 points. For Tennessee, Chaz Lanier and Jordan Gainey scored 17 points.
The next weekend, the Cougars will face Duke for the opportunity to advance to the Male National Championship.
