The Greek coast guard said that he had found the bodies of two women and another 39 migrants on the small island of Farmakonisi in the Aegean Sea on Monday, and that an investigation was being carried out to determine what had happened.
The circumstances of the deaths were not clear, they said.
The Greek authorities were informed that the migrants had arrived on the island today, just 9.7 kilometers from the Turkish coast, officials of the Coast Guard said, and added that they were still looking for other survivors of a possible shipwreck.
The rescued were transferred to the island of Lados nearby.
Greece, in the southeast corner of the European Union, has long been a favorite entrance door to Europe for migrants and refugees from the Middle East, Africa and Asia.
The Coast Guard has rescued more than 250,000 people since 2015, when Greece was in the first line of the migration crisis in Europe and almost one million people landed on their islands, including Farmakonisi, from Turkiye. Thousands have died at sea, according to the UN Agency for refugees.
This month, at least seven migrants drowned, including a boy, a girl and two women, when her boat sank on the island of Lesbos.
