Wrexham promoted again as Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney-owned club nears Premier League dream

Wrexham AFC is just one step away from the Premier League of English football after being promoted on the second level of the system: the third consecutive promotion of the Dragons Network.

The Welsh football team, owned by the Hollywood stars, Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mcelhenney, advanced to the upper level of the English football league, or the championship, after beating Charlton 3-0 on Saturday.

Reynolds and Mcelhenney celebrated the victory with thousands of fans who assaulted the local field, despite police warnings for those who invaded the countryside.

“It simply seemed an impossible dream,” Reynolds said after the victory, according to Associated Press, reflecting on the third promotion of his team in three seasons. “We said five years ago that our goal was to reach the Premier League. There were many laughs, but it feels like something that could come to fruition at this time.”

Wrexham started Saturday’s game with two goals in three minutes, leaving them with a comfortable advantage from the beginning. The striker Sam Smith sealed the agreement with the third goal in the 81st minute.

The team, the oldest of Wales and the third oldest football team in the world, will spend next season sitting just below the coveted Premier League.

When Reynolds and Mcelhenney took the reins in 2021, Wrexham was in the National League, which seems unlikely that the team would be so quickly at a short distance from the upper level of English football.

“The owners have entered and have done incredible job. I am very happy with them because they deserve it,” said manager Phil Parkinson, according to the AP. “They are invested in all decisions, but they trust us in our decision making and that is why we have succeeded in the last three years.”
