Washington – About 75,000 federal employees have accepted the offer of “deferred resignation” of the White House to resign, but receive salary until September, according to a spokesman for the staff management office.
The deadline for the offer closed on Wednesday after a federal judge failed to finish a temporary pause to the program.
NBC News cannot independently verify the number of employees who took the White House offer.
The number of federal employees informed that they have received the offer amounts to less than 5% of the Federal Labor Force. The Administration had established greater expectation, hoping that 5-10% of the Federal Work Force would accept its offer. Semafor first reported the number of employees who accepted the offer.
In fiscal year 2023, the dropout rate of the Federal Work Force was 5.9%, according to the Association for Public Service.
Earlier on Wednesday, the American district judge George A. O’Toole Jr. allowed the renunciation offer to continue after having previously issued an order to temporarily stop the offer. O’Toole said in his ruling on Wednesday that the unions they demanded to stop the offer did not have the legal position necessary to present the case.
The Personnel Administration Office responded to O’Toole’s decision, saying that “he was happy that the court has rejected a desperate effort to cancel the deferred resignation program.”
“From 7:00 pm tonight, the program is now closed,” said OPM spokesman McLaurine Pinover in a statement. “There is no doubt: the Deferred Resignation Program was both legal and a valuable option for federal employees. This program was carefully designed, examined completely and provides generous benefits so that federal workers can plan their future. “
