This year’s Rockefeller Center Christmas tree was cut down in Rensselaer County, New York.
Statistically speaking, that’s unusual.
While New York State is one of the top 10 Christmas tree producers in the U.S., according to the Department of Agriculture, it accounts for less than 3% of national cut Christmas tree production.
Nationally, about 1 in 3 Christmas trees cut down are cut down in Oregon.
American tree farms cut down 14.5 million Christmas trees in 2022, the most recent year for which USDA data was available. According to the National Christmas Tree Association, an industry trade group, there are more than 300 million Christmas trees growing on approximately 15,000 farms in the U.S.
Michigan, North Carolina and Oregon have the most land dedicated to Christmas tree farms. These farms across the country cover more than 400 square miles of land, a little less than half of Rhode Island’s land area, according to the latest USDA data.
