An armed man opened fire in Atlanta on Friday afternoon, near the Campus of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the University of Emory, killing a police officer who responded to the calls of an active shooter, authorities said.
The officers found the suspect with gunshot wounds on the second floor of a building that houses a CVS pharmacy. He died from his wounds on the scene, said Atlanta police chief Darin Schierbaum.

How did the shooting developed?
Schierbaum said that 911 calls on an active shooter arrived around 4:50 pm for 1600 Clifton Road, in front of the CDC campus. Around that same time, the nearby Emory University sent an alert that there was a situation of active shooters on the campus. Both Emory and the CDC Real Campus were closed.
When the officers responded to the scene, Schierbaum said they found a Dekalb County officer injured by critics. He was taken to the Hospital of the University of Emory, where he died of his wounds.
Schierbaum said the officers heard shots inside a CVS in a retail and apartment complex at the intersection, and entered the building to try to locate the shooter.
The suspect was found on the second floor. Schierbaum said he had been hit by shots, but that the officers are not sure whether the injuries were self -inflicted or the police.
He died in the place, said Schierbaum. His identity has not been publicly published.
Was there any victim?
Dekalb County Police officer injured died from his wounds, said Greg Padrick, interim chief of the Dekalb County Police Department.
The Dekalb County Police Department identified the officer as David Rose, 33. He joined the department in September.
“I was committed to serving the community. At this time we are asking for community sentences,” said Padrick. “It is a noble profession that we all have. We respond the call to serve our community and he gave his life with the commitment to serve others.”
Leave behind a wife and two children with one on the way, said the executive director of Dekalb County, Lorraine Cochran-Johnson.
“There is a mother and a father, as well as brothers, who also share this traumatic loss,” he said.
No civilian were injured in the shooting, said the mayor of Atlanta, Andre Dickens. A CVS representative said no one in his store was injured.
Four other people took to the hospital where they were treated by symptoms of stress and anxiety, said Schierbaum.
CDC building hit
The director of the CDC, Susan Monarch, said that four of the campus buildings were beaten during the shooting. The authorities did not know the injuries that occurred there.
Monararez said that he is “disconsolate by today’s attack” and thanked local officials for “helping to avoid more damage to our staff and the community.”
She said the CDC campus was locked when the officials investigated the shooting.
Schierbaum said researchers are analyzing whether the rounds fired in the CDC buildings were useful.
“Multiple rounds were shot, we believe in the application of the law and potentially in the CDCs,” he said.
Was there a reason?
When asked if it was believed that the shooter attacked the CDC, Dickens said the investigation is in the preliminary stages and that he could not say more about a possible reason.
He referred to the suspect as “a known person who can have some interests in certain things, that I cannot reiterate the right with any confidence until the investigation is carried out completely.”
The Georgia Research Office is leading research on the shooting, authorities said.
What have the officials said?
Governor Brian Kemp denounced the shooting, the second in the state in a week.
“Twice this week, the upset criminals have attacked innocent Georgians,” Kemp said in X, referring to a shooting in the post fort Stewart army two days before.
He thanked the “brave lifeguards” who “rushed towards the danger of subjecting the shooter and saving lives, reminding us how crucial they are.”
“We ask him to join us to hold them in our prayers, along with those damaged tonight near the center of the CDC,” he said.
American Senator Raphael Warnock, D-G., Said he was monitoring the shooting and was praying for the officer who was killed and all students and teachers.
“I am devastated that our community faces another tragedy of armed violence,” Warnock wrote in X.
The FBI director, Kash Patel, said the agency would offer full support to Georgia officials following the shooting.
“Pray for the family, the friends and their colleagues of this hero who acted quickly to defend others and made the last sacrifice,” Patel said in X.
Dickens said that armed violence as the guy who exploded on Friday, shows that there must be a national conversation about armed violence.
“The mass shootings, the scenarios of active shooters should not become the norm,” said Dickens.
Second shooting in Georgia in a week
Friday’s shooting occurs two days after an active service soldier wounded five members of the service in Fort Stewart before a group of witnesses submitted it, authorities said.
It is believed that Quornelius Radford, 28, an automated logistics sergeant, opened fire on Wednesday with a personal gun before they stopped, Brig said. General John Lubas, general commander of the 3rd Infantry Division at the Fort Stewart Hunter army airfield.
The victims were not publicly identified, but it was said that they were Radford co -workers at the base, which is 40 miles southwest of Savannah.
Three of the five injured were discharged from the hospital, what Lubas said Thursday “incredible considering the circumstances and ranges of those who were committed.”
The two who remain hospitalized are expected to recover, Lubas said.
Lubas said it was not clear what the shooting caused.
Radford was the object of harassment about his stuttering almost as soon as he joined the army, the former co -workers said.
