WestJet cybersecurity breach to be investigated by privacy commissioner

The Canadian privacy commissioner has opened an investigation into a cyber attack in Westjet that saw an access of “malicious actor” to airline systems.

The airline said in a statement last month that a third “sophisticated and criminal” could access some personal data related to trips in June.

Westjet said that the safety of his airline’s operations was never under threat.

A statement from the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada Philippe Dufresne says that the investigation will analyze the security safeguards that Westjet had at the time of the violation and the adequacy of their notifications to the affected people.

He says that the office is involved with Westjet to ensure that he is taking the appropriate measures to respond to the incident.

The statement says that the immediate approach is to ensure that the company is “indeed” to address the violation and protect the personal information of its customers.
