Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday received a warm welcome upon arrival in Mauricio, and the island nation honors him through a traditional Bihari cultural performance known as Geet Gawai. The event, deeply rooted in the inheritance of Bhojpuri, was carried out as a tribute to the deep historical and cultural ties between India and Mauricio.
Geet Gawai, who was recognized by UNESCO as part of the intangible cultural heritage of humanity in 2016, is a musical tradition of Bhojpuri that combines songs, prayers and dance. Traditionally carried out during ceremonies prior to the wedding, it serves as a means of cultural expression and social cohesion between the Indian diaspora in Mauricio. Over the years, it has evolved beyond private meetings and is now exhibited in public presentations, symbolizing the shared heritage between the two nations.
Prime Minister Modi landed at the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgolam International Airport, where he was received by his Mourician counterpart, Navinchandra Ramgolam Prime Minister. In expressing his gratitude for the warm reception, Prime Minister Modi said that his visit aimed to strengthen the long -standing association between India and Mauricio. “He landed in Mauricio. I am grateful to my friend, Prime Minister Dr. Navinchandra Ramgoolam, for the special gesture of welcoming me at the airport. This visit is a wonderful opportunity to interact with a valuable friend and explore new ways for collaboration in several sectors,” PM Modi published in X.
The Indian community in Mauricio resulted in large quantities to welcome Modi, and some expressed their emotion through artistic taxes and cultural actions. A local artist spent four hours drawing the portrait of Modi, waiting for an autograph, while young members of the diaspora expressed their eagerness to meet him. The artists, who had prepared for ten days, presented a fusion of Kathak, Bharatnatyam and Kuchipudi’s dance forms as part of the celebrations.
During his visit, Prime Minister Modi will participate in the celebrations of the National Day of Mauricio and will hold high -level meetings with the country’s leadership. It is also ready to inaugurate more than 20 projects financed by India, including the College of Civil Services and a health center in the area, both built with Indian assistance. These initiatives reflect India’s commitment to support Mauricio’s development, with previous projects that include infrastructure, medical care and community programs.
