The dramatic video caught at the time a 9 -year -old northern Carolina student saved his classmate by drowning the Heimlich maneuver last week.
Jayceon Branch, a Raleigh Charter Elementary student, took a step forward at the perfect time to save his friend while they were on the basketball court.
The incident, caught in school surveillance cameras, shows that Jayceon approaches his friend, Donye Moore, 7 years old, after he seems to be hunched. Donye was eating a granola bar that was stuck in his throat.
Jayceon, without hesitation, jumped to action and performed the Heimlich maneuver in Donye, saving him from drowning his food.
“I learned from see YouTube,” Jayceon told the NBC News Wral affiliate in Raleight. “Because a teacher saw a student drowning and the student came to the teacher and began doing this and then the teacher began to do what I did to Donye.”
Eric Johnson, the executive director of the Charter Raleigh Oak school, could not be more proud of Jayceon’s actions.
“He was a hero, he only saved a child’s life,” Johnson said during a phone call with NBC News while remembered the incident.
Wral captured Jayceon’s reaction and Donye’s Mothers while watching the school surveillance of their two children.
“At first, I didn’t understand that I had to receive the Heimlich maneuver or anything like that. It was surprising. I am grateful that his friend has been able to prove it to him, ”said Donye’s mother, Aja Moore.
Johnson went on to talk very well about both children, specifically saying Jayceon: “He came into action and did his own. We really try to teach that in our school … We are really proud of him. “
The Charter Raleigh Oak school celebrated a “applaud” on Monday for Jayceon to celebrate his heroism. He requested that Donye be celebrated, so the couple walked through the halls while the parents, teachers and students cheered them both.
