After accusing the Trump administration on Monday of “Lack of respect”, Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen, on Wednesday told a local broadcaster who welcomed the decision of the White House to take a step back from a non -invited visit to the Greenlandic people.
Denmark still controls decisions on the foreign and defense policy of the island that houses 56,000 people.
Earlier this week, Trump doubled his suggestion that the United States should take care of the scarcely populated island, saying that it was important for national security.
“I think Groenland will be something that may be in our future,” Trump told journalists on Monday, adding: “The people of Greenland asks us to go there.”
Calling the “unofficial” visit, the outgoing prime minister of Greenland, Múte Egede, said in another Facebook publication on Monday that the measure of US officials was not “even appropriate or acceptable among allied and friendly nations.”
Trump’s repeated comments about taking Greenland in recent months have galvanized the political sphere of the vast island, where independence has been widely popular.
During a strictly challenged parliamentary election held earlier this month, all candidates said they did not want their island to become part of the United States on March 15, almost a thousand Greenlands marched through the capital, Nuuk, to protest against the annexation proposed by Trump.
A result of the surprise elections saw the Demokraatit Pro-Business party defeat the Inuit ruling party of Egede Ataqatigiit, but has not yet formed a coalition government. Meanwhile, a caregiver supervises Greenland’s affairs.
During the vote earlier this month, the eventual winner, the starting prime minister and the leader of the Demokraatit party, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, told NBC News International Society News that “we do not want to be Americans. No, we do not want to be Danish. We want to be Groenlanders.”
