A United States Court of Appeals confirmed on Monday the fine of $ 83.3 million of a jury against President Donald Trump for defamed the author E. Jean Carroll, who was considered to have sexually attacked.
The January 2024 order consisted of $ 65 million in punitive damage after the jury discovered that Trump acted maliciously in his many public comments about Carroll, $ 7.3 million in compensatory damages and $ 11 million to pay an online campaign to repair Carroll’s reputation.
The civil order, which caused an audible panting in the Federal Court, far exceeded the more than $ 10 million in defamation damages that Carroll had sought.
Trump, whom a jury considered responsible for sexually assaulting Carroll in a separate federal case in New York, used his real social platform at that time to shoot a series of insulting messages that attack Carroll, the trial and the judge, whom he called “an extremely abusive individual.”
‘Substantial financial penalty’
“We argue that the District Court was not wrong in any of the contested decisions and that the jury’s tax prizes were reasonable in the light of the extraordinary and heinous events of this case,” wrote the United States Court of Appeals for the second circuit.
Carroll, 81, alleged that Trump laid it in 2019, when he made his accusations of assault public, saying that “it is not my guy.”
The jury members were shown Trump’s deposition in October 2022 during which he confused a photo of Carroll for his ex -wife Marla Maples, who threatened to question Carroll’s statement was not his “type.”
In 2023, another federal jury found Trump responsible for sexually assaulting Carroll in a department store costumes in 1996 and later defame in 2022, when he called her a “complete work.”
“We agree with the District Court in which the jury had the right to find that Trump would not stop defamed Carroll unless he was subject to a substantial financial sanction,” the Court of Appeals ruled today.
Trump was not obliged to attend the trial or testify. However, he used the case to generate heated media coverage and to feed his claims to be a victim while campaigning for a return to the White House.
