The United States Secretary of the Treasury, Scott Besent, said Sunday that President Donald Trump could talk to the XI Jinping of China “very soon” and that such a call could help break the logjam in commercial conversations between the two largest economies in the world.
Trump accused Beijing on Friday of violating an agreement reached last month in Geneva, negotiated by Besent, to temporarily reduce the amazingly high rates that had been imposed on each other, in a pause to last 90 days.
China’s slow exit in export licenses for rare earths and other elements necessary to make cars and fried potatoes fed the frustration of the United States, The Wall Street Journal on Friday, a concern since American officials confirmed.
But Besent seemed to knock down the pressure in a notch, saying CBS ‘Fac The Nation’ so that the holes could be united.
“I am sure that when President Trump and the president of the XI party have a call that this will be solved,” said Besent, and pointed out that China was “retaining some of the products they agreed to release during our agreement.”
When asked if the rare earths were one of those products, Besent said: “Yes.”
“Maybe it’s a Chinese system failure. Maybe it’s intentional. We’ll see after the president speaks with” XI, he said.
When a Trump-XI call could take place, Besent said: “I think we will see something very soon.”
Since Trump returned to the presidency, he has slapped tariffs to most American commercial partners, with especially high rates in Chinese imports.
