The eradication of polyomyelitis as a global threat to health can be delayed unless the US fund clippings.
WHO works with groups such as UNICEF and the Gates Foundation to end polyomyelitis. The planned withdrawal of the US United States has impacted efforts, including the arrest of collaboration with the US disease control and prevention centers.
Last week, the UNICEF polyomyelitis subsidy ended when the State Department reduced 90 percent of USAID subsidies worldwide to align aid with the ‘America First’ policy of President Donald Trump.
In total, the association is missing $ 133 million from the USA. The area includes two countries where a wild form of polyomyelitis is spreading: Afghanistan and Pakistan.
“If the financing deficit continues, it can delay eradication … it can lead to more children to paralyze,” he said, adding that the longer it took to end polyomyelitis, the more expensive it would be.
He added that the partners were working on ways of dealing with the shortage of financing, which will greatly affect staff and surveillance, but expected the United States to finance the fight against polyomyelitis.
“We are looking for other sources of financing … to maintain both priority personnel and priority activities,” he said, adding that vaccination campaigns in Afghanistan and Pakistan would be protected.
UNICEF did not respond to comments requests, and a spokesman for the Gates Foundation reiterated that no base could fill the void left by the United States.
Saudi Arabia gave $ 500 million to the eradication of polyomyelitis last week.
The association already faces a deficit of $ 2.4 billion at 2029, since it accepted last year that would take longer and cost more to eradicate the disease than expected.
