New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday praised Government of Uttarakhand for being the first state to implement the uniform Civil Code (UCC).

UCC prioritizes the protection of individual rights while establishing regulations for marriage, divorce matters, succession of properties and cohabitation agreements, among other aspects within the State. This legislation, promulgated in 2024, extends to all state inhabitants, regardless of their religious affiliations, and explicitly prohibits multiple marriages and minor marriages. However, the legislation excludes the programmed tribes designated under constitutional articles 342 and 366 (25), as well as individuals and communities protected under part XXI. Uttarakhand became the first state of the country to implement this on Monday.
At the inauguration of the 38 National Games, Prime Minister Modi also reiterated his commitment to bring the 2036 Olympic Games to India while heading to athletes and spectators gathered. He officially declared open games after receiving the ceremonial flame and seeing the athletes parade.
Highlighting the importance of sports in the construction of the nation, Modi expressed the approach of his government in supporting and improving the abilities of athletes. He described the National Games as a reflection of the unity and diversity of the country, calling it a “beautiful portrait of ‘Ek Bharat, Sresth Bharat'”.
The prime minister also used the platform to share health advice, encouraging young people to adopt healthier lifestyles. He urged them to combat the growing problem of obesity by reducing oil consumption in their diets and incorporating exercise regularly and entering their routines.
The games, which are held in seven cities in Uttarakhand with Dehradun as the main place, present about 10,000 athletes competing in 32 disciplines for 450 gold, silver and bronze medals. The event extends until February 14.
