Federal prosecutors will not seek the death penalty for the son of the famous king of the Mexican drug “El Chapo” if he is convicted of multiple positions in Chicago.
The US prosecutor Andrew Botros presented a notice of a prayer on Friday saying that he would not be looking for the death penalty against Joaquín Guzmán López. The notice did not offer any explanation.
Joaquin Guzman López’s lawyer, who appears in the online judicial records as Jeffrey Lichtman, told The Associated Press on Tuesday that he was satisfied with the decision “since it is correct.”
“Joaquín and I hope to solve the charges against him,” Lichtman said.
Joaquín Guzmán López’s father is Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, former leader of the Sinaloa cartel. According to federal prosecutors, the played smuggled mountains of cocaine and other drugs in the United States for 25 years. He was sentenced in 2019 for multiple positions of conspiracy and sentenced to life imprisonment in an American prison later that year.
Prosecutors claim that Joaquín Guzmán López and his brother, Ovid Guzman López, directed a faction of the poster known as “Chapitos”, or Little Chapos, which has been identified as a main exporter of fentanyl to US prosecutors of prosecutors of sweeping accusations without appointment in 2023 against the dozens of the members of the Sinaloa cartel, including the brothers.
The federal authorities arrested Joaquín Guzmán López and another leader of Sinaloa for a long time, Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada, in July in Texas after they landed in the United States in a private plane.
Joaquín Guzmán López has been accused of eight positions, including money laundering, drug trafficking and conspiracy to distribute drugs. He declared himself innocent.
Zambada said that Joaquín Guzmán López kidnapped him and brought him to the United States. It faces multiple positions in a federal court in New York, including the international distribution of cocaine, money laundering and manufacturing drugs for illegal importation. He declared himself innocent.
Ovid Guzman López was arrested in Mexico in 2023 and extradited to the United States. He is accused in a federal court in Chicago of money laundering, drugs and crimes of firearms. He declared himself innocent, but online judicial records indicate that he is scheduled to appear before the court on July 9 to change his guilt as part of an agreement with prosecutors.
