A Turkish court arrested an outstanding independent journalist Fatih Altyli for comments on his social networks that supposedly threaten President Tayyip Erdogan, announcer NTV And others reported Sunday.
Altayli, who has more than 1.5 million youtube subscribers, was arrested on Saturday for the comments in a video published on Friday in which he went to a survey that showed most of the Turks opposed to Erdogan’s decision for life.
Altayli made reference to the Ottoman rulers, saying that the Turks had “killed” or “drowned” some who no longer wanted in power.
The prosecutors in Istanbul then said that the comments “contained threats” against the president and launched an investigation.
NTV He said that in his defense before the Court, Altayli denied having threatened Erdogan, citing him by saying that his comments were taken from context and made threats appear, despite the fact that they were simply part of the rhetorical historical discussions.
The development occurs in the middle of a series of arrests of opposition figures in recent months, including the arrest of the mayor of Estanbul, Ekrem Imamoglu, Erdogan’s main political rival, in March.
The main CHP of the opposition and some western countries have called for repression a politicized movement to eliminate Erdogan’s electoral challenges.
The government denies these statements, saying that the Judicial Power and Turkiye courts are independent.
