Washington: The president of the United States, Donald Trump, said Thursday that it was important that the Middle East countries join Abraham’s agreements, whose objective is to normalize diplomatic ties with Israel, saying that it will guarantee peace in the region.
“Now that the nuclear arsenal that is ‘created’ by Iran has been totally erased, it is very important for me that all the countries of the Middle East join the Abraham agreements,” Trump wrote in a publication on social networks.
As part of Abraham’s agreements, signed during Trump’s first mandate in office, four Muslim majority countries agreed to normalize diplomatic relations with Israel after US mediation. The efforts to expand the agreements have been complicated by a high number of deaths and starvation in Gaza.
The war in Gaza, where local authorities say that more than 60,000 people have died, has caused global anger. Canada, France and the United Kingdom have announced plans in recent days to recognize an independent Palestinian state.
The Trump administration is actively discussing with Azerbaijan the possibility of bringing that nation and some allies of Central Asia to Abraham’s agreements, hoping to deepen their existing ties with Israel, according to five sources with knowledge of the matter.
During his first term in 2020, Trump secured a series of agreements, known as Abraham’s agreements, to establish the official diplomatic ties between Israel and several Arab states, including the United Arab Emirates, Bahrein and Morocco.
