The president of the United States, Donald Trump, said Friday that his administration would move to strip Harvard University of his tax exemption status, increasing his confrontation with the Ivy League school.
“We are going to eliminate Harvard’s exempt state. It is what they deserve,” Trump wrote on social networks.
Exempt tax designation allows non -profit organizations, such as universities, avoid federal income taxes and allow donors to claim tax deductions.
The statement occurs in the middle of tensions between the Trump administration and elite universities on issues that include admissions, hiring practices, supervision of the curriculum and responses to the protests of the pro-palestine campus.
Trump before threatened to revoke the university taxes, adding: “The tax exemption status is totally depending on acting in public interest!”
The Trump administration has already reduced more than $ 2 billion in federal subsidies to Harvard and has taken similar measures against other elite institutions, including freezing the federal funds of the University of Columbia and the launch of research in dozens of universities.
Last week, Harvard University sued the Trump administration for the cut.
