Washington – President Donald Trump did not rule out the possibility of looking for a third mandate in the White House, which is prohibited by the Constitution under amendment 22, saying in an exclusive interview with NBC News that there were methods to do so and clarify that “I was not joking.”
“Many people want me to do it,” Trump said on a telephone call from Sunday morning with NBC News, referring to his allies. “But, I mean, basically I tell you that we have a long way to go, you know, it’s very early in the administration.”
“I am focused on the current,” Trump added, in some of his most extensive comments to date on the third mandate.
When asked if he wanted another term, the president replied: “I like to work.”
“I’m not joking,” Trump said, when he was asked to clarify. “But I am not, it’s too early to think about it.”
When asked if plans have been presented to allow him to look for a third mandate, Trump said: “There are methods that you could do.”
NBC News asked about a possible scenario in which Vice President JD Vance would apply for a position and then pass the paper to Trump. Trump replied that “that is one.”
“But there are also others,” Trump added.
When asked to share another method, Trump simply responded “no.”
Amend the Constitution to abolish the limit of two periods would be extremely difficult, requiring a two -thirds vote of the Congress or two thirds of the states that agree to call a constitutional convention to propose changes. Any of the routes would require the ratification of three quarters of the states.
The president pointed out his number of surveys, saying that “many people would like me to” take a position for a third mandate.
Trump has previously commented on the functioning of a third term, although Republicans have seen these comments such as jokes or the president trolling their critics.
Representative Andy Ogles, R-TEN., Created a resolution that requested the extension of the presidential term limits, which would allow Trump to look for another term in office.
Meanwhile, Trump’s ally Steve Bannon said in an interview in News Nation that he thinks Trump “will run and win again in 2028”. Bannon said in the same interview that he thought that “we will have a couple of alternatives” to determine how Trump could look for a third mandate despite the maximum of two periods to maintain the presidency.
The White House has amplified Trump’s comments comparing with royalty, publishing a photo of a false magazine cover that represents the president with a crown after the administration reduced congestion prices in New York City.
The publication of the White House to X cited Trump’s previous comments on Truth Truth Social: “Long live the king!”
