Trump slams Harvard as funding fight heads to court – World

The president of the United States, Donald Trump, attacked Harvard on Thursday as an “anti -Semitic and left institution”, while the prestigious university fights the freezing of their administration in court.

Since he returned to the White House, Trump has tried to take several universities to Heel about the statements that tolerated anti -Semitism on their campus, threatening its budgets, the tax exempt from taxes and the registration of foreign students.

But Harvard has refused to bow, and on Monday he filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration.

The demand requires a freezing of funds and conditions imposed on federal subsidies that will be declared illegal, arguing that the measures are equivalent to political interference aimed at compromising the independence of the Ivy League institution.

“The place is a liberal disaster,” Trump wrote on his social platform of truth, also complaining that he has admitted to students “around the world that they want to tear our country.”

Its side occurred one day after issuing an executive order aimed at higher education, altering how federal authorities decide which universities and schools can access billions of dollars of certain subsidies and student loans.

The executive order seeks to suppress what Trump brands “illegal discrimination”, that is, any measure that seeks to promote the representation of “individual and ethnic minority individuals.”

Anti -Semitism claims

Trump and his White House team have publicly justified their campaign against universities as a reaction to what they say is an unworthy “anti -Semitism and the need to reverse diversity programs aimed at addressing the historical oppression of minorities.

The Administration states that the protests against Israel’s military campaign in Gaza that extended through the United States university campuses last year were full of anti -Semitism.

Many American universities, including Harvard, took energetic measures against protests at the accusations at that time, with the Cambridge headquarters placing 23 students on probation and denying titles to another 12, according to protests organizers.

Harvard president Alan Garber said the Trump administration had launched “numerous research” in university’s operations.

Trump’s claims about diversity take advantage of long -date conservative complaints that American university campuses are too liberal, close right -wing voices and favor minorities.

In the case of Harvard, the White House seeks unprecedented levels of government control over the internal functioning of the oldest and rich university in the country, and one of the most respected educational and research institutions in the world.

Harvard has rejected government supervision demands, which led Trump administration to freeze $ 2.2 billion in funds.

In Wednesday’s executive order, Trump decreed that “US students and taxpayers deserve better, and my administration will reform our dysfunctional accreditation system so that schools and universities focus on offering high quality academic programs at a reasonable price.”
