The president of the United States, Donald Trump, said Tuesday that he would not mind if the Liberal Party won the next Canadian elections, saying: “I prefer to deal with a liberal than a conservative.”
Trump has taken a hard position towards Canada, imposing tariffs on Canadian imports and repeatedly threatening to turn it into state 51 of the United States.
During an interview at Fox News’s Ingraham’s angleThe presenter Laura Ingraham said that Trump’s treatment to Canada could boost the ruling liberals to win the next elections and lead a government that is hostile to the United States.
“I don’t care,” Trump replied. “I think it is easier to treat, in reality, with a liberal and maybe they will win, but I really don’t care. I don’t care at all.”
Trump then pointed to the leader of the Pierre Poilievre Conservative Party.
“The conservative who is running is, stupidly, there is no friend of mine. I don’t know him, but said negative things,” he said. “When he says negative things, I couldn’t matter less.”
These followed the previous comments that Trump has made about the conservative leader, including the statement that Pailievre is “not a magician type.”
The liberals, who have been in power since Justin Trudeau was chosen Prime Minister in 2015, only a few weeks ago, headed for a certain defeat against the conservatives in an election that he must have on October 20 and can happen before.
But the party is increasing a great return with a new leader: the recently sworn prime minister Mark Carney.
Some recent opinion surveys have shown that liberals close the gap or even ahead of conservatives.
The liberals have portrayed Pailievre as a right -wing populist in the same line as Trump.
Pailievre has adopted the slogan “Canada first” in the face of the threats of the United States, and tried to link Carney with the former Trudeau government.
The Canada Conservative Party and the Liberal Party of Canada did not immediately respond to requests for comments.
