The Minister of Transportation, Anita Anand, will reverse her decision to withdraw from politics and announce that she will seek re -election if Mark Carney is the liberal leader, according to CBC News.
Anand is ready to make the announcement on Friday at an event with Carney, according to sources with knowledge of the plans that were not authorized to speak publicly.
Carney, a former central banker in Canada and the United Kingdom, is widely seen as the favorite to happen to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
Anand and his office did not respond to requests for comments. The Carney campaign also did not respond to a request for comments.
Anand, who had been seen as a possible candidate for liberal leadership, announced on January 11 that he would not seek the leadership of the party and would not execute in the next federal elections.
She said in a statement published on social networks at that time that she has been “deeply honest and humiliated to serve as a member of the Oakville Parliament and as a member of the Cabinet.”
But liberal fortune changed dramatically in the weeks after that announcement. The return of the president of the United States, Donald Trump, to the White House and Trudeau’s announcement that he would resign as prime minister, has shaken liberal support in a series of public opinion surveys.
The ruling party is now statistically linked to conservatives in some surveys, after years of drag by two digits and for more than 20 points in recent months.
Carney constantly survey better than his leadership rivals. It also has more cabinet and caucus endorsements than any other candidate and has raised more more donor money.
Anand’s decision would give the liberals a holder in a key driving in a battlefield region in Ontario. The deputy of Oakville has held several cabinet portfolios since it was chosen in 2019. Anand was the Prime Minister of Public Services and Acquisitions, then became the second woman to serve as Minister of National Defense.
Anand is not the Liberal Prime Minister of the MP Cabinet to change his mind about the search for re -election.
Housing Minister Nathaniel Erskine-Smith announced last year that he would not seek re-election, but changed course when he was appointed cabinet in January.
And the New Brunswick parliamentarian, Wayne Long, who had said he would not run again, also said he would seek re -election if Carney wins the leadership. Long was one of the first members of Caucus to publicly ask Trudeau’s resignation.
