A man died in a traffic accident in Karachi on Sunday, since deaths involving heavy vehicles continue to increase in the metropolis, police said.
According to the Senior Police Superintendent of the Center (SSP) Zeeshan Shafiq Siddiqi, “Man was riding the motorcycle when a 16-wheel trailer (TLA-142) hit him at 4:10 am near Erum Bakery, Liaquatabad-4”.
“The man suffered critical injuries and was transported to the Abasi Shaheed hospital, where he died,” said SSP Siddiqi Dawn.com.
The officer said that the deceased was just over 50 years old, and his identity could not be determined immediately, and added that the accident enraged the people who tried to set the heavy vehicle on fire.
However, the police prevented them and saved the trailer of being burned, arresting the driver, identified as Mohammed Arif.
The rules that restrict the movement of heavy vehicles were recently implemented in the metropolis amid the growing traffic accidents that involve Dumpers and Petroleros and protests over the death of citizens.
Last month, the provincial government prohibited the entry of heavy vehicles into the city during the day, only allowing them to operate from 11 pm to 6 am
However, exemptions were granted to trucks that transport water, oil products, medications, meat and other essential goods.
The Sindh government has also made it mandatory that all heavy vehicles in Karachi have a physical conditioning certificate amid the growing number of traffic accidents that involve Dumper trucks.
Rights activists and civil society members said yesterday that the growing number of fatal traffic accidents in the city and the poor state of the application of the traffic law were violations of human rights, that the State has not been able to safeguard.
Provincial legislators belonging to the MQM-P criticized the Traffic Police for their “failure” of controlling heavy vehicles that claimed more than 80 lives only in January.
