Ties frosty but Bangladesh to buy 50,000 tonnes of rice from India | India News

DHAKA: Bangladesh’s interim government has approved the import of 50,000 tonnes of non-basmati parboiled rice of India to meet domestic demand, a decision that demonstrates that the commercial relationship between the two neighbors remains uninterrupted despite the recent cooling of diplomatic relations.
The proposal on rice import was approved by the government procurement committee on Tuesday and a private Indian company will supply it to Bangladesh as the highest bidder, sources said. Importing 50,000 tonnes of rice at a price of $458.84 per tonne will cost $22,942,000 (around Rs 197 million or Tk 280 million).
The committee approved the policy proposal to import 600,000 tonnes of rice from international markets for fiscal year 2024-25 for national emergency needs and public interest.
