On Wednesday, an Army veteran carrying an Islamic State flag in a pickup truck plowed into a crowd of New Year’s revelers in New Orleans, killing 15 people and injuring many.
The FBI identified the attacker as Shamsud-Din Jabbar42 years old, US citizen residing in Texas. Records indicated his previous employment as a real estate agent in Houston and his military service as an IT specialist.
Anne Kirkpatrick, the police superintendent, called Jabbar a “terrorist”, while the FBI confirmed discovering “an Isis flag” in the vehicle.
US President Joe Biden called the attack “despicable” and revealed that Jabbar had posted videos online before the incident “indicating it was inspired by Isis.”
Biden also mentioned that authorities were investigating possible connections between this incident and a subsequent explosion of a Tesla Cybertruck near a hotel owned by Donald Trump in Las Vegas on Wednesday, which resulted in one victim, although he noted no links established so far.
FBI agent Alethea Duncan said Wednesday that investigations were continuing and noted that authorities “do not believe Jabbar is solely responsible.”
