Iran and Russia signed a $ 25 billion agreement to build nuclear centrals in the Islamic Republic, Iranian state media reported on Friday, only a few hours before the probable return of UN sanctions in Iran.
“An agreement for the construction of four nuclear plants with a value of $ 25 billion in Sirik, Hormozgan was signed between the company Iran Hormoz and Rosatom,” said State Television.
Iran has only an operational nuclear energy plant in Bushehr in the south, with a capacity of 1,000 megawatts, only a fraction of the country’s energy needs.
According to the State News Agency IRNAEach plant will have a capacity of 1,255 megawatts, although no details were provided in the timeline.
The measure is produced when the so -called Snapback sanctions caused by European parties to an 2015 emblematic nuclear agreement with Iran will return at the end of Saturday.
Great Britain, France and Germany triggered the sanctions last month, accusing Iran of not fulfilling their commitments under the agreement.
In a session of the Security Council on Friday, China and Russia presented a resolution draft to allow another half year for conversations, but it is unlikely to get enough support to approve.
Western countries have long accused Iran of looking for an atomic bomb, a position that Tehran denies vehemently, defending their right to a civil nuclear program.
The United States in 2018 withdrew unilaterally from the nuclear agreement with Iran, which led Tehran to begin to return its commitments.
The conversations between Washington and Tehran to reach a new agreement were underway, before being derailed by unprecedented Israeli strikes in Iran in June that began a 12 -day war united briefly by the United States.
Iran had previously signed with Russia a nuclear energy agreement in 1993 allowing the construction of the Bushehr plant, after Germany had abandoned it as a result of the Islamic Revolution of 1979.
