A Syrian and Israeli official is expected to meet in Baku later on Saturday outside the visit of Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa to Azerbaijan, a diplomatic source in Damascus with knowledge of the problem.
“There will be a meeting between a Syrian official and an Israeli official outside the visit by Sharaa in Baku,” said the source, who requested anonymity due to the sensitivity of the problem.
Israel is an important arms supplier of Azerbaiyan and has an important diplomatic presence in the Nation of the Caucasus, which comes its enemy arch Iran.
The diplomatic source emphasized that Sharaa himself would not attend Baku’s meeting, which would focus on “the recent Israeli military presence in Syria.”
After the overthrow of the former ruler Bashar al-Assad in December, Israel carried out hundreds of air attacks in Syria to prevent key military assets from falling into the hands of the interim administration headed by Sharaa.
He also sent troops to the non -sponsored cushioning zone that used to separate the opposite forces in the strategic heights of the Golán, of which he has performed deeper incursions in the south of Syria.
Sharaa has repeatedly said that Syria does not seek conflicts with her neighbors and, on the other hand, has asked the international community to press Israel to stop her attacks.
His government recently confirmed that he had maintained indirect contacts with Israel looking for a return to the 1974 disconnection agreement, which created the damping zone.
Israel has opinions to the Sharaa government in the context of its past links with Al-Qaeda.
But at the end of last month, Foreign Minister Gideon Saar said that Israel was interested in reaching a peace and normalization agreement with Syria. A source of the Syrian government cited by the state media replied that this talk was “premature.”
But during a visit to Lebanon this week, the special envoy of the United States to Syria Tom Barrack said: “The dialogue has begun between Syria and Israel.”
After meeting Sharaa in Riad in May, the president of the United States, Donald Trump, told journalists that he had expressed his hope that Syria would join other Arab states that normalized his relations with Israel.

The Syrian president arrived in Baku today to talk to his counterpart, Ilham Aliyev.
Azerbaijan announced that he would begin to export gas to Syria through Turkiye, according to a statement from the presidency of Azerbaiyani.
