Police discovered the suspect dead in a double homicide that took place in Calgary on Sunday night.
Calgary police have canceled an emergency alert for an armed man they say is a suspect in the double murder of his wife and father after locating the man Monday afternoon.
In an update, police said that at 3:40 p.m. they received tips from the public in relation to the suspect’s vehicle, which was seen parked along a road in the Water Valley area.
Upon arrival, police located the suspect dead nearby.
Sunday murders
On Sunday, December 29, police were called to a home in the 0 to 100 block of Kincora Grove NW.
The agents found a man in his 70s deceased.
As police investigated, a second victim, a woman in her 30s, was found dead in a home at 11:15 p.m. in the 300 block of Tuscany Ridge Heights NW.
“At this time, the timeline is unclear,” said Insp. Lee Wayne of the CPS major crimes unit.
“The CPS were called to Kincora last night at 9.30pm, ie 9.30pm, where we found one of the deceased, the male deceased, and then went to an address in Tuscany where there were additional concerns raised by the family. members, and that is where we found the deceased woman.
“But as far as the timeline or order of those events, we don’t know; it’s still under investigation.”
Emergency alert
Around 12:15 on Monday, an Alberta Emergency Alert was sent out about “a dangerous man with a firearm” in northwest Calgary and Bearspaw, a community just outside the city limits.
The alert identified the suspect as 38-year-old Benedict Kaminski.
Wayne said Kaminski “was not known to police in the past.”
“He has no prior convictions,” Wayne said.
In a news release, police said Kaminski was believed to be somewhere northwest of Calgary or Bearspaw and asked all residents of those communities to be on alert.
Police said both deaths are believed to have been targeted and domestic in nature.
“We largely believe this was a targeted incident, but we go through a risk assessment process at every stage of the investigation, and once we start to see certain behaviors or concerns arise, we look to use the public’s help and alert public about possible risks,” Wayne said.
“And really, we are stronger together, in terms of using the public to help us in this investigation.
“The motive behind the murders is unknown at this time, but there is a domestic connection between the suspect we have and the victims.”
Police said autopsies on both victims will be conducted on Friday, January 3.
