Manipur has been dealing with ethnic violence since May 3, 2023, when the clashes broke out between the majority of Meitei and the tribal community of Kuki after a demonstration of the Union of Manipur of all tribal students (ATSUM).
The conflict has led to hundreds of deaths and a generalized displacement, which leads to the central government to deploy paramilitary forces to restore order.
In February, Prime Minister N Biren Singh resigned after almost two years of disturbances. The State has been under the president’s government since then.
The current violence is based on the deep ethnic tensions that have cooked over low heat for decades, exacerbating divisions between the Hindu meiteis and the Kuki Christian tribes.
