The Sundance Film Festival will move to Boulder, Colorado, in 2027 after more than 40 years in Park City, Utah, the organizers announced Thursday.
“Boulder offers a small town charm with a compromised community, distinctive natural beauty and a vibrant artistic scene, which makes it the ideal place for the festival to grow,” said the Sundance Institute in a press release.
The Sundance Institute carried out a one -year process that consists of proposals and visits to the site to different cities to determine which location would best adapt to the festivities. Finalist cities include Cincinnati, Ohio and Salt Lake City, Utah.
The president of the Board of the Sunday Institute, EBS Burnough, explained that this decision was “informed by a detailed evaluation of the essential key components to create our festival.”
“We have a deep appreciation for the finalist cities and their communities, including Boulder, Colorado, Cincinnati, Ohio and Salt Lake City, Utah, who presented overwhelmingly strong proposals and dedicated their time, passion and commitment in each step of the road,” Burough said.
The institute provides for the use of cinemas and places in the center of Boulder as the heart of the festival. You can use spaces around Pearl Street Mall, which is a street only for pedestrians, according to the Institute.
The mayor of Boulder, Aaron Brockett, is “delighted” to welcome the Film Festival to his new home.
“The independent and creative spirit of Sundance is the perfect combination for the vibrant and inclusive culture of Boulder,” said Mayor Brockett. “We thank the leadership of the Sunday Institute for putting your faith in us, and we expect a long and creative association.”
Mayor Nann Worel of Park City did not immediately respond to a request for comments from NBC News.
