Sri Lanka’s leftist president marked the anniversary of the Independence of Great Britain on Tuesday with the promise of changing the image of the impoverished island nation as a “corrupt” country.
The Marxist Anura Kumara, disguised, Dissanayake, dispensed with the elaborate military robe of passing steps and jet horses and the usual steps of the steps to commemorate the power transfer of 1948.
Instead, his government organized a reduced military march according to his promise of Pare Laversh expenses in government officers.
“We are committed to transforming the global image of Sri Lanka from a country known for corrupt governance,” he told La Nación.
“Despite the innumerable obstacles and deeply rooted defects of the past corrupt political system, the government of the people, built by the collective will of citizens, is constantly moving forward.”
The Dissanayake government concluded a restructuring of delayed debt with bilateral and private creditors at the end of last year, ending the state of Sri Lanka as a bank in bankruptcy.
Sri Lanka had breached his external debt of $ 46 billion in April 2022 after running out of foreign exchange to finance the importation of food, fuels, medications and other essential elements.
The unprecedented economic collapse forced the then president Gotabaya Rajapaksa to resign. His successor, Ranil Wickremesinghe, obtained a rescue loan of $ 2.9 billion of the International Monetary Fund.
Dissanayake, who defeated Wickremesinghe in the elections last September, maintains the harsh austerity measures introduced under the administration of his predecessor and has promised to continue the FMI rescue program of the four -year IMF.
“Like the new government, in the last four months, we have sat down the foundations for a stable economy and introduced a new political culture,” Dissanayake said.
