AMRITSAR: One day later SGPC revoked its resolution of December 9 that excommunicated Narain Singh Chaura over his attempted assassination of SAD chief Sukhbir Badal, hardline Sikh groups on Wednesday hailed the decision as a victory for the pants (community) and defeat of SAD and SGPC.
“This shows that the SGPC and SAD feared losing the support of the panth if they went ahead with Chaura’s proposal. excommunication. They also acknowledged that the December 9 resolution could have further damaged SAD’s electoral prospects,” said Sikh Youth Federation (Bhindranwala) president Bhai Ranjit Singh.
After Chaura was caught trying to shoot Badal on December 4, hardline Sikh groups demanded that he be granted the title of Panth Rattan. However, some members of the SGPC and other organizations called for his excommunication.
On December 9, the SGPC executive committee recommended that the Akal Takht jathedar excommunicate Chaura from the panth. However, at a meeting on December 31, the SGPC quietly rescinded its previous resolution without giving any explanation.
Jarnail Singh Sakhira, a hardline leader, said: “If the SGPC had not revoked the resolution, the situation could have worsened. Chaura’s actions reflect prevailing sentiments of broadness, which the SGPC has now recognised.” Sarchand Singh, former Sikh seminary spokesperson Damdami Taksal“The SGPC acted hastily to appease the SAD, but when they realized that their decision would alienate the panth, they quietly reversed it. This reflects the immaturity of the SGPC leadership and causes embarrassment to the institution.”
Sarchand said the attack on Sukhbir exposed internal conflicts within the SAD. “The sequence of events, including the way the incident was presented to the public and media, and the inconsistent statements, indicate the ambitions of a particular SAD leader who sought control of the party. However, this “The move has not gained acceptance among the majority of SAD leaders, who continue to rely on Badal’s legacy to sustain the party,” he added.
