The shots were fired at dawn on Saturday near the prison facilities in Texas, where Ghislaine Maxwell was held, sources familiar with the situation at NBC News said.
The Federal Prison Office officers listened to the shooting outside the Federal Prison Bryan field before responding and interacting with the alleged shooter, the sources said.
The BOP confirmed that a shooting took place near the prison in Bryan at 1:15 am on Saturday.
No guard or staff members were injured, sources and bop said. The shooting seemed to be the result of a block party near the prison where two rivals, or rival gangs, participated in a shooting.
The shooting was not directly related to Maxwell’s imprisonment in prison, the sources said.
Daisy Pérez, who lives on the other side of Prison Street, said he heard the shots while he was at home with his children.
“We are very scared because I am alone with my 2 girls and my autistic son, this happened when they enjoyed films in the living room,” he said by text message. “Everything happened very fast, I just went to my room and I see the prison police in the fence.”
Pérez said that violence as the shooting is not normal in his neighborhood.
The Bop said in a statement that an investigation is ongoing.
“We are deeply grateful to our personnel and partners of application of the law for the rapid and professional response,” said the BOP.
Maxwell’s move to the federal field of prisoners Bryan earlier this month he found a violent reaction of those who said that he should not be retained in a minimum security prison considering his positions of sexual crime.
Shortly after being transferred, the prison said he was expanding security measures in response to his arrival, said a senior law officer to NBC News.
