For almost three decades, Richard John Dyke took advantage of the children who deviated in their dark orbit.
The 48 -year -old husband of a nursery operator in a small city declared himself guilty of 10 positions of sexual interference, child pornography and voyeurism on May 12 at Moose Jaw, Sask., Provincial Court. Prosecutor Stephen Yusuff read an agreed statement of facts in the registry that day, detailing abuse against 33 victims. Judge Brian Hendrickson ordered the document sealed.
The narrative described how Dyke took photos of victims with a Samsung camera phone. How she used a hidden camera in a bathroom and connected to her computer to record boys and girls between six months and 17 years. The way he touched and filmed them, introduced them to sex toys and encouraged them to masturbate “to show them how Sinning looked.”
Yusuff and defense lawyer are Fonkalsrud jointly recommended a 17 -year sentence. With the credit for the time attended in preventive detention, Dyke faces a net sentence of just under 15 years. In exchange for the plea, the crown is staying another 73 positions.
Dyke is scheduled to learn on Wednesday if the judge accepts the recommendation of sentence.
Dyke spoke briefly after declaring himself guilty.
“We all have options in life. Some are good options and others are bad,” he said.
“There is no justification for what I did. While I sat in pretrial detention and I thought about my situation, I have come to the conclusion, I will never try to define why. Look for a why I felt nothing but an uncomfortable justification. Excuses.”
A MONSTER SURFACES
Initially, Dyke faced 13 positions when he was arrested in November 2023 while living in Assinibia, which is about 130 kilometers southwest of Regina. RCMP began investigating accusations of sexual aggressions since the mid -2010 decade, and the officers finally determined that three children under 12 were sexually attacked.
In May 2024, RCMP presented 60 more positions after greater investigation into sexual aggressions of minors for a period of 18 years. RCMP said they identified 29 additional victims, all young women between the ages of 18 months and 17 when the crimes occurred, and most were men.
Crimes date from 2005 to November 2023.
The victims were located in the cities and towns of Saskatchewan de Tisdale, Estevan, Coronach, Assiniboia, Grangelbourg and Swift Current.
Dyke admitted that he began collecting child pornography online in 1997, storing the images on a hard drive seized by the police.
The court heard that before his arrest of 2023, Dyke had no criminal record. The judge said that, although he had no registration, his admissions showed “in fact, he was not a citizen respectful of the law.”
Fonkalsrud described how Dyke was born in 1977 and that his father had been convicted of similar crimes of abuse. Dyke refused to talk about whether he had been abused. Dyke had been married for 22 years. His wife left him after his arrest.
Dyke apologized “for lying and continuing to live that life during the years we have been together.”
He also apologized with “the victims and their families, with my friends, with my parents and brothers, and with my family for the pain, pain and trauma that I have caused by these crimes.”
In addition to prison time, it also faces a prohibition of firearms for life and must provide a DNA sample and be in the National Registry of Sexual Criminals.
