Sexual harassment: LHC upholds dismissal of district judiciary employee – Pakistan

LAHORE: The Superior Court of Lahore has confirmed the dismissal of the service of a district judicial employee accused of causing sexual harassment of their female colleagues through social media messages.

A special bank comprised of Judge Albid Hussain Chattha and Judge Anwaar Hussain approved the verdict on the departmental appeal presented by Rana Nadeem Akhtar, who was a personnel officer of the Kasur District & Sessions judge.

The female staff filed several complaints in the district courts against the appellant of harassing them through WhatsApp messages.

A departmental consultation against the appellant was launched, which led to his dismissal of the service.

In his appeal, the former personnel officer questioned the disciplinary action, claiming that he was taken against him after he requested official accommodation.

He argued that the action was not justified since the incidents of alleged harassment occurred a year and a half ago.

In his decision, the bank noted that presenting a complaint of harassment requires an immense courage and courage of a woman.

He pointed out that many victims refrain from informing crimes such as violation due to fear of social stigma, much less harassment in the workplace.

The bank said that delays in the report of harassment cases should not undermine the credibility of a complaint, but that the authorities should encourage victims for their courage.

The judges argued that women’s harassment in the workplace is a serious problem, and not addressing it can have devastating consequences for society and the national economy.

They said that women play an important role, both directly and indirectly, in the economy and society of the country.

“Ensure that a safe work environment increases the confidence and participation of women,” the trial said.

He decided that the appellant was not only guilty of harassment, but also tried to influence a judicial magistrate in a bail case, which is now part of his service record.

Nine employees of the Judicial Branch of the Kasur district testified against the defendant, confirming that he sent them inappropriate messages.

The appellant also tried to interfere with the recruitment process of his female colleagues without any authority, which was considered an act of manipulation.
