A man who terrified women in St. John’s in 2012 is now demanding the federal government, saying that he will never walk again after being stabbed in a prison in Renus, NB
The Sofyan Boalag claim statement says it was imprisoned in the Atlantic institution on February 3, 2023, when prison staff opened the doors to all cells in a corridor simultaneously so that inmates could align for medications.
Boalag says he was attacked behind and stabbed repeatedly.
“The plaintiff says that his wounds were of a catastrophic nature, which made him unable to walk for the rest of his life,” says the statement of claim, filed in the Federal Court on January 20.
Boalag was convicted of raping two women and a 15 -year -old girl in Terranova during the summer and autumn of 2012.
There were six plaintiffs in total, and the women described how they strangled them unconscious and threatened them with a knife in the streets of the city in the early hours of the morning.
His spree led to generalized fear in the city center and a police warning before his arrest in December 2012.
Boalag was sentenced in 2016 and declared a dangerous criminal for the courts, which resulted in an indeterminate prison sentence.

“I am not satisfied that there is a reasonable expectation that the public can properly protect Mr. Boalag for a measure less than an indeterminate sentence,” Judge Pamela Goulding said in his decision.
Boalag appealed that decision to the Supreme Court of Canada, which rejected its application in 2021.
Prison staff failed at multiple levels, alleges the demand
According to the lawsuit, presented by the lawyer of the Halifax Laura Neilan area on behalf of Boalag, the inmates were released from their cells that day to align for medications.
Boalag says he was approached from behind, and did not see the attack coming. He says that the correctional officers did not intervene in a timely manner, leaving him vulnerable to multiple stabs of a “sharp weapon.”
The demand says that the attacker was a man with “preindicators of violence” towards Boalag.
He alleges that prison staff could not prevent arms from entering the installation, they failed to look for inmates before allowing them to align and ignored internal policy by letting multiple inmates leave their cells at the same time.
The demand also says that the prison could not guarantee that the “appropriate personnel levels and trained personnel” were in force, and could not “classify properly and accommodate dangerous or incompatible inmates.”
The federal government still has to submit a defense declaration.
In a statement to CBC News on Friday, a Canada Correctional Service spokesman said they are aware of a case involving Boalag, but said the agency cannot comment while before the courts.
“CSC employees are trained and are expected to carry out their duties with professionalism, in full compliance with our policies, procedures and, of course, the law,” the spokesman wrote. “CSC does not tolerate any violation of these standards, and all accusations are thoroughly investigated, regardless of the source.”
According to the demand, Boalag is currently in a correctional center in Ontario.
