Islamabad: The National Health Institute reported the second case of wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1) for the new year on Wednesday when a sample of the Badin district of Sindh tested positive in its laboratory in Islamabad.
The first case of the year was reported by the district of Dera Ismail Khan, in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
A total of 74 cases were reported last year. Of these, 27 were from Baluchistan, 23 of Sindh, 22 Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and one from Punjab and Islamabad.
Poly is a paralyzing disease that has no cure. The multiple doses of the oral vaccine and the completion of the routine vaccination program for all children under five are essential to provide children with high immunity.

“It is crucial for parents to ensure vaccination for all their children under five to keep them protected,” he said.
The poliovirus invades the nervous system and can cause paralysis or even death. While there is no cure, vaccination is the most effective way to protect children from this paralyzing disease.
Repeated immunizations have protected millions of children from polyomyelitis, allowing almost all countries in the world to free from the disease, except Pakistan and Afghanistan.
