MUFTI SHAH MIRAccused of helping Pakistan’s ISI to kidnap Indian businessmen and the former Navy officer of India Kulbhushan Jadhav from Iran, he was shot dead on Friday night by armed men not identified in Tobat, Baluchistan.
Mir, known for being involved in trafficking in people, was leaving the local mosque after the prayers of Taraweeh (night) when the cyclists ambushed him and shot him several times at close range. According to a report in Dawn, Mir was immediately transferred to the hospital where he succumbed to his wounds.
Mir, a human and arms trafficker, operated under the cover of a mufti (scholar) and was a member of Jamiat Ulema-E-Islam, an Islamic fundamentalist political party.
Mir had survived two attempts in his life last year
The sources said it was an important duct linked to the death squads led by ISI and played an important role in the kidnapping and extrajudicial murder of numerous young people from Baloch. It was also fundamental to spread religious extremism in Baluchistan.
In March 2016, Jadhav was kidnapped by a group led by Mullah Omar Irani of JAISH AL-ADL From the border of Iran-Pakistan and delivered to the Army of Pakistan through several intermediaries, including MIR. Irani was also killed, along with his two children, in the same area (Turbat) in November 2020, supposedly for ISI.
It is also suspected that Mir was shot dead by ISI agents in what is believed to be an internal conflict that has been brewing for some time. Last week, two others from Jui-F-Wadera Ghulam Sarwar and Molvi Amanullah-Fueron killed by assailants transmitted by bicycles in what the Local Police described as directed murders. The security guard also suffered gunshot wounds. Mir had also survived two attempts in his life last year and recently had restricted his movements. “He was providing intelligence on Baloch’s combatants to the Pak army. In 2023, a teacher named Abdul Rauf was killed by alleged blasphemy in Tobat. The murder was carried out on MIR’s instructions,” said a source.
Jadhav, who directed a business in Chabahar (Iran) after a premature retirement from the Navy, was kidnapped and imprisoned for false positions in Pakistan. He was intercepted in the Baluchistan Chaman area at the Pakistan-Fanganistan border on March 3, 2016. In April 2017, a Pakistani military court sentenced Jadhav to death, accusing him of participation in espionage and sabotage activities. India condemned the verdict as a premeditated murder. The International Court of Justice maintained the execution while asking the Pakistan government to review the condemnation process in addition to consular access to India.
