The province’s Special Investigations Unit is investigating after a police office near Thunder Bay, Ont., shot and wounded a man who fired at a police cruiser with a shotgun.
The 58-year-old man was seen at 2:18 pm on Thursday walking along Highway 11/17, about 30 kilometers west of Thunder Bay on Pebblestone Road.
Callers to 911 reported he was carrying a shotgun, the SIU said in a news release.
“Officers responded and located the man,” the SIU said.
“The man fired his firearm and struck a police cruiser. The officer was not hit by the gunfire. An officer shot the man.”
Paramedics arrived and took the man to hospital, where he is being treated for a serious injury.
“No police officers were injured,” the statement said.
“At this time, one subject officer and one witness officer have been designated. Three investigators and two forensic investigators have been assigned to the case.”
