A Saskatoon priest will go to jail for kissing a 13-year-old girl in a supply closet.
The 71-year-old man appeared in provincial court Thursday.
Defense attorney Zachary Carter confirmed that Janko Kolosnjaji He was sentenced to eight months in jail, followed by 18 months of probation.
Kolosnjaji kissed the teen two years ago at St. George’s Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral in the Pleasant Hill neighborhood.
He was found guilty in February.
In June, prosecutor Sheryl Fillo described the impact on the victim and her family.
“This was, for the victim, her first kiss,” Fillo said.
“She was a refugee from a war-torn country. [Ukraine] and extremely vulnerable… and he would have known it.”
The teenager read a victim impact statement in court, describing the “pain and shame, I couldn’t understand what had happened.”
“The world became hostile and dangerous.”
In a statement, his mother said the assault involved a person in a position of authority.
“This is the destruction of a child’s confidence, dignity and soul.”
