New Orleans – The veteran of the Marshal of the Field Field of the New Orleans Saints, Derek Carr, decided to retire due to a labral break in his right shoulder and “significant degenerative changes” in his rotator sleeve, the team announced on Saturday.
Carr, 34, has played for 11 professional seasons since he was selected outside the state of Fresno by the then Oakland Raiders in the second round of the 2014 NFL Draft.
The Saints acquired it as a free agent in 2023, but had mixed results in New Orleans, with 14-13 as a starter while fighting through oblique, manual and head injuries that made him lose seven games last season.
Carr, who was entering the third year of a four -year contract and $ 150 million, experienced unexpected pain in his launch shoulder when he began to increase the training of this low season, which led to his diagnosis that has now shortened his career.
“Surgery was an option, endangering the entire 2025 season, but there was no guarantee that Derek would return to the level of strength, function and performance of the game to which he was used to,” said the Saints in a written announcement.
The Saints did not recognize Carr’s injury until the day before the draft. Carr did not speak publicly about the injury until a few days later, when he delivered a guest sermon in a Las Vegas church. In that sermon, Carr said that his critics were “lying” about him when they questioned the unusual moment of the injury, as well as the initial reticence of the team and Carr to address it openly or answer questions about it.
Carr has a total passing of 41,245 yards, 257 touchdowns and 112 interceptions. He retires with a regular season record 77-92 as a starter and without having won a playoff game.
Carr said he made the decision in consultation with his wife, Heather, and “when reflecting prayer.”
“For more than 11 years, we have been incredibly blessed, and we are always grateful and humiliated by this experience,” said Carr. “It is difficult to find the right words to express our thanks to all teammates, coaches, administration, property, team officials and especially fans who made this trip so special.”
The decision also occurs after New Orleans used a high second round draft choice to select Tyler Shough from Louisville as a possible future titular quarterback, although it remains to be seen how fast it can be ready for that role.
Other QB in the Saints list include Pro Spencer Rattler of the second year and the third year player Jake Haener, who published a victory among them in seven games last season, six of which Rattler began.
