Consumers are not ready to get rid of their travel plans despite the growing economic sadness. But they are looking for bargains, and hoping to find them on the open road.
About 53% of US consumers are planning vacations this season, compared to 48% a year ago, Deloitte researchers reported Tuesday. There is a especially strong interest in short but more frequent trips closer to home, even by car, since travelers adopt a “more frugal approach” this year, analysts said.
Chris Narváez, 45, had planned to visit London and Rome this summer. Air rates to Europe have dropped 8%, according to the Hopper travel reserve platform, but the director of Human Resources based in New York City said it is “reaching the pause button” on trips abroad.
“Among the new requirements for visas, the current administration, the challenges with the control of air traffic and nearby failures in local airports, I do not feel as comfortable as I would go to a plane,” he said, referring to the updated identification and entrance rules along with greater customs stops. Road driving remains much more dangerous than commercial air trips or the passenger railroad, as showed federal data. But recent air traffic control problems at Newark Liberty International Airport have scared many travelers, Humphrey said. The travel volumes at the New Jersey airport have dropped 20% from this last year, NBC News reported Tuesday.
The cost is also a factor. While national round trips are reaching minimum of three years, according to Hopper, driving usually remains much more affordable. Hunt will have a lot of company on the roads. Among the drivers surveyed in the video network of the GSTV service station this winter, 56% said they planned to drive more on their summer vacations than last year; 54% reported that they chose to drive on flying to save money.
Many Summer Road hikers have stricter budgets. Bank of America researchers found that they were driving superior transport mode for low and medium income tourists this summer, preferred by at least 64% of each group, compared to less than 55% of the high winners.
The good news is that car rental costs decreased approximately 2.1% in April since the previous year, according to federal data, and Hopper expects approximately stable with 2024 levels throughout the summer.
