Nueva Delhi: The Day of the Republic, which is commemorated every year on January 26, is one of the most important national celebrations in India. The occasion marks the historical implementation of the Indian Constitution of 1950, which established the Nation as the Republic.
Importance of the Day of the Republic
The path of India to become the Republic began during the British colonial domain. Although independence arrived on August 15, 1947, the Nation initially operated under British legislation. The country needed its own legal framework that embodied its democratic principles and its diverse inheritance.
After extensive deliberations, the Constituent Assembly adopted the Constitution of India on November 26, 1949. However, its implementation occurred on January 26, 1950, which marked the official transformation of India into a Republic. Since that transcendental day, on January 26, the day of the Republic is celebrated, in commemoration of the sovereign status of India.
Why was it chosen on January 26 to implement the Constitution?
The January 26 election has a deep historical importance. On this date of 1930, under the leadership of Jawaharlal Nehru, the Indian National Congress proclaimed “Purna Swaraj”.
