A Rawalpindi court on Saturday sent three suspects to police custody for an alleged case of murder and honor murder of a newly married woman.
The police had initiated the investigation based on the information that a woman had been killed in honor in Pirwadhai, after a jirga in which members of both families participated. When the woman’s family and in -laws realized that the police were secretly investigating the incident, the deceased’s husband registered a case with the police under section 496a. Police sources said the case was registered by the husband the same day that the woman was allegedly killed by suffocation with a pillow.
According to sources close to the investigation, up to eight people, including the GraveDigger, the secretary secretary, the Rickshaw driver who transported his body to the cemetery, his brother and his relatives, including his brother, have been arrested by the police in relation to the case.
Three of the total suspects were present at the Court of Judge Qamar Abbas Taralar today, according to a court order seen by Dawn.com.
The judge approved the custody request of the Investigation Officer (IO), stating: “… the physical return of three days of the accused for said purpose is granted. The defendants occur before the court on July 29”.
In another order today, the judge approved the application to carry out the exhumation of the victim’s body and scheduled it for July 28 at 10 am the judge ordered the medical superintendent of the Holy Family Hospital to delegate a medical officer who would arrive at the cemetery for exhumation and also order the officer of the House of Representatives of the Pirwadhai Police to designate a guard in the tomb of the victim exhumation
Rawalpindi Tehsil’s medical officer also received instructions to provide health workers for the process.
Separately, the police added sections 109 (Incrustation), 201 (causing the disappearance of the evidence of crime, or giving false information to the offender), 302 (murder) and 311 (ta’zir after the exemption or aggravation of the right of qisas in Qatl-i-Amd) of the Pakistan Criminal Code of Pakistan to the FIR on Friday.
The city police officer Syed Khalid Hamdani also said Dawn.com that a team of 10 members was formed to help in the investigation.
He said that the team included several senior police officers and IT experts from the Rawalpindi Police, who would guarantee timely support and the provision of technical evidence to the investigation officer of several institutions.
Hamdani said the team would also make raids to guarantee the timely arrest of more suspicious in the light of the information obtained from the detainees during the investigation.
The incident occurs a few days after the police arrested at least 14 suspects for their participation in the murder of a man and a woman in the degari area of Quetta de Baluchistan, who were shot dead in order of a tribal jirga ahead of Eidul Azha for the so -called “honor.”
The arrests were made after a video of the murder went viral on social networks, in which a group of people could be seen shooting the couple.
In Pakistan, ‘honor’ murders continued to claim the lives of women throughout 2024, perpetuated by deeply rooted social beliefs about family dignity and shame.
Pakistan Human Rights Commission data show that in 2024, ‘honor’ murders continued to be a serious problem in all Pakistan, with particularly high figures in Sindh and Punjab. From January to November, a total of 346 people were victims of “honoring” crimes in the country.
The previous two years also saw a constant increase in murders related to the so -called ‘honor’.
